Most recently, the hospital was ranked as the 5th best hospital in Asia and the 18th best hospital in the world by Newsweek. The hospital has also been ranked as one of the top 10 hospitals in Asia by The Economist.
NUH was established in 1985 and is the first university hospital in Singapore. It is also a major tertiary and referral institution.
It is the only public and not-for-profit hospital in Singapore to offer a comprehensive suite of specialist care for adults, women and children, as well as paediatric kidney and liver transplant programmes.
With a bedding capacity of 1210, the hospital is the principal teaching hospital of the medical school and the NUS Faculty of Dentistry.
The hospital has been ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the world, and is the only hospital in Asia to receive this recognition.
It received the National Medical Excellence Awards (NMEA) in 2021.
NUH has also been awarded the prestigious Magnet Recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Mount Elizabeth (Orchard) is a private hospital with a bedding capacity of 345 and has been recognized as one of the top hospitals in the country.
It has received accreditation of quality care by JCI, as well as the Singapore Quality Class certification.

Most recently, it was named the Best Private Hospital in Singapore by the Singapore Medical Association. This is the second time that the hospital has received this accolade.
