What is ophthalmology? Why is eye treatment so complex?
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine and surgery that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and management of eye defects; and conducting scientific research to find the causes and cures for eye disorders and vision problems. The different types of ophthalmologists are cornea specialists, retina specialist, glaucoma specialist, neuro- ophthalmologists, etc. Each subspecialty is an indicator of the part of the eye that the ophthalmologist specialises in. Eye surgery or ocular surgery is a very advanced complex procedure as the eye is a very soft and delicate organ. The ophtalomologist has to take extreme care before, during and after performing ocular surgery so as to not damage this fragile organ. Hence, ophthalmology is a very coveted and niche field.
